Why do I feel more pain in the knee in winter? Expert explains

The expert explains how to avoid and prevent pain in the knee and articulation with the arrival of winter

With the winter approach, many regions of Brazil have recorded significant temperature falls. For those who suffer from Knee painThis period can be a little complicated, because with the drop in thermometers, the complaints of joint pain also increases. According to the orthopedist Pedro Ribeiro, a specialist in sports traumatology, this discomfort is common and has physiological explanations related to the climate.

“When the weather cools, the body adopts a series of mechanisms to preserve heat. One is vasoconstriction, which reduces the caliber of the blood vessels to maintain the central temperature. This, however, reduces the blood flow to the ends, like the knees, which can generate pain and rigidity”, explains the doctor.

Another factor that contributes to discomfort is the change in synovial fluid, responsible for the lubrication of the joints. “With the cold, this liquid can become more viscous, making it difficult to make joint movements and cause a sense of rigidity and pain, especially in the morning or after long periods of inactivity”, adds the expert.

According to the orthopedist, people with pre -existing diseases, such as arthrosis, often also notice a worsening of symptoms with the drop in temperature. “But even those who have no diagnosis can feel pain. This is not necessarily a sign of something serious, but it is a warning to keep the body active and well heated,” he underlines.

How to avoid knee pain in the cold?

The tendency to move less during cold days directly affects joint health. “The lack of movement leaves the muscles more contracted and rigid. This interferes with the biomechanics of the articulation and can lead to uncomfortable in those who have already predisposition or history of problems in the knees,” says Pedro Ribeiro.

Therefore, the expert highlights the importance of maintaining a normal physical activity routine even in winter. “The exercises improve circulation, strengthen the muscles around the joints and help in the natural lubrication of the body. Movement is one of the best medicines to keep the knees healthy, even in the cold.”

To strengthen care and prevent discomfort in the knees caused by the cold, the orthopedist brings other advice:

  • Stay hot: Wear clothes suitable for the cold and, if possible, wears thermal bags on the knees;
  • Avoid long periods: Move through the day right inside the house;
  • Regular extension: Do a regular stretch, especially when you wake up and before going to bed;
  • Practice physical activities: Take long -impact walks or exercises;
  • Balanced food: Consuming foods that contribute to muscle and joint health.
