This week, Minas Gerais He announced a novelty: the state has become the first in the country to perform the foot test in its expanded version, capable of identifying up to 60 diseases in infants. Until then, the exam performed throughout the Brazil It allowed the screening of a maximum of 23 diseases.

In Minas, the test is performed by Action and research center for diagnostic support (Nupad)connected to Faculty of Medicine from UFMG. The result shows enormous progress in neonatal health, since the examination is able to identify rare diseases of metabolic, genetic and infectious origin.

Professionals collect the child’s blood still in the first days of life, in everything Basic Health Unit (UBS) of the state. Therefore, they analyze Nupad’s material and, in case of changes, immediately notify the municipality of origin of the child for confirmation and care exams.

“These are complex diagnostic diseases, as they involve genetic techniques. However, the expansion program has been rigidly adequate. All inputs and equipment is imported. At the same time, we constitute a assistance network. Today we can say that every child diagnosed in the test has already guaranteed a treatment.”he said José nélio JanuárioDirector of Nupad, in an interview with UFMG.
