What the Berlin Wall separated, Arts United […]
In the place that once housed the feared wall of Berlin, today it is the largest open gallery in the world, the East Side Gallery, on the banks of the Spree River in Friedrichshain.
The gallery has 1.3 km of arts and is in the largest continuous section of the Berlin Wall still existing.
The works began to emerge shortly after the fall of the wall of 9 November 1989, when 118 artists from 21 countries began painted by the East Side Gallery. Just over a year later, the place would have received the state of the protected memorial.
From time to time, the works are restored, such as the works of 2000, when a stretch of 300 meters of the wall and 33 frames has been restored. Already in 2009 the entire East Side gallery was restored by 87 participating artists who worked in 100 paintings.
In more than one hundred on the east side of the wall, the artists interpreted the political changes of 1989/90, whose highlights are the famous “Beijou” by Dmitri Vrubel and “Labor Breaking the Wall” of Birgit Kinders.

Since the Berlin Wall dropped in 1989, the capital of Germany has been experiencing a constant state of renewal. Therefore, in recent years, the Sisuda architecture of the buildings erected under the command of the totalitarian regimes of the past has acquired new characteristics with the colors of graffiti, sculptures and posters scattered throughout Berlin.
If in the past the murals and graffiti were used as political propaganda or a form of youth to protest, Berlin Street’s work is today a consolidated art present throughout the city.
It is not surprising that Berlin, a huge outdoor art gallery, is considered one of the capitals of the world’s graphite.
The East Side Gallery is close to the streets of Warschauer Straße and Ostbahnhof, with access facilitated by the railway stations.
