When dependence enters home: how to help someone who has to face drug addiction

The biggest mistake is to think that addiction is a matter of “lack of willpower”

Summary

Chemical dependence is a disease that requires specialized support, understanding and continuous support, avoiding excessive control, fault and judgments, while the family should also take care of herself during the process.

More than 3.5 million people in Brazil live in chemical dependence, according to Fiocruz data. But the impact goes far beyond the individual: parents, children, partners and friends end up joining this battle, often not knowing where to start.

There is no magic formula. But there are safer and silent paths that have made the difference in the life of many families.

The biggest mistake is to think that addiction is a matter of “lack of willpower”. It is not. Chemical dependence is a disease, recognized by the World Health Organization, which affects the brain, behavior and emotional balance.

What to do – and what not to do

1. Don’t try to control everything – Forcing the employee to quit, forcefully taking substances or watching each step can worsen the situation. Attention should be on dialogue and seek specialized help.

2. Look for a professional guide at the beginning – First there is technical support, the greater the possibility of avoiding aggravation. Specialized clinics, support groups and mental health centers also support the family.

3. Avoid guilt or punishment speeches – Phrases like “you are ending with your family” strengthens only the feeling of failure. The idea is to demonstrate that there is a way – and that nobody needs to face it alone.

4. Offer alternatives, not impositions – Presenting real treatment options, places with prepared staff, listening to fears and being present during the decision -making process makes the difference.

5. Take care of you too – Families who deal with addiction often get sick together. Family therapy, groups such as Nar-Anon or individual psychological support are fundamental.

What is the time to think about hospitalization?

Hospitalization should not be seen as a punishment, but as a possibility of intensive and safe treatment. It can be voluntary (with acceptance of the person) or involuntary, in the most serious cases, with risk for life or third parties.

The most important thing is that hospitalization, if necessary, is done responsibly, in centers with humanized structure and approach.

The importance of monitoring after treatment

“Many families believe that when they leave the clinic, the problem is solved. In fact, it is here that the care must be even larger. The impact is part of the process in many cases and continuous support, with the professional sequel and family support, can be decisive to maintain recovery”, says Luiz Felipe Almeida Caram, doctor and partner of the BH rehabilitation clinic, MinaSais Therapeutic.

Helping someone with drug addiction is painful, often confused, but not impossible. The information, listening and real support is worth more than any judgment. And every little attitude – listen, welcoming, forwarding – could be the beginning of a new story.
