The Italian antitrust agency fined the Giorgio Armani brand at 3.5 million euros, the equivalent of R $ 22.3 million at the current price, for misleading commercial practices regarding working conditions in the production of its leather pieces.
According to the competition and the market guarantee authority (AGCM), the brand issued “declarations of ethical and social responsibility that have not been presented clearly, specificly, accurate and unequivocal”.
These statements are in the Code of Ethics and on the Armani website and, according to the Municipality, they are a marketing tool aimed at responding to increase consumer expenses regarding sustainability and social responsibility.
However, AGCM stressed that these values contradict the real working conditions verified in suppliers and sub -fencing responsible for most of the production of leather bags and accessories on the brand.
The investigation has shown that companies subcontracted by Armani suppliers have even removed the safety devices of the machinery to increase their production capacity, “putting at risk of the safety and health of workers”.
In addition, employees who produced the luxurious design articles received part of their salaries “outside” and had no adequate health conditions for working.
“In this context, it is clear that respect for the rights and health of workers does not correspond to the content of the ethical and social declarations spread by Giorgio Armani,” said the Antitrust Agency, adding that the company was aware of this situation.
In a declaration, Armani said he had received the fine with “sadness and surprise” and promised to appeal to the administrative court against the sanction. “We always operate with the utmost correction and transparency in relation to consumers, market and stakeholders,” he said
