The interruption of the front cruciate ligament removes the players for months; Surgery is standard treatment
Summary
The lesion of the anterior cruciate ligament (LCA) is common in sport, removing athletes for months; Surgical reconstruction and intensive rehabilitation are standard treatments for recovery.
Ronaldo, Neymar, Dudu, Ganso, Pedro and, more recently, Ryan Francisco are just some names in the vast list of athletes who have already been far from the meadows due to the previous injury of the previous cruciate ligament (LCA), not only in football, but also in other sports. The Brazilian gymnast Rebeca Andrade, for example, had to perform three surgical interventions to treat the injury.

The rupture of the ligament, responsible for the stabilization of the knee, usually removes athletes for several months. Most cases occur in rotation movements, especially when the player rests a foot on the ground and rotates the trunk on the opposite side. Physical contact is not always involved. The technical gesture itself, like the change of direction, is sufficient to cause the injury.
For André Pedrinelli, orthopedist and professor at the University of San Paolo, the intense routine of the players is one of the main factors to increase cases. “This increase in the lesions that we have seen in recent years in the previous crusader derives from several factors, the main is the increase in exposure to injuries or risk factor, since the number of training and games time increases. This exposes the athlete to a wider joint stress, with low recovery and this provides a greater number of injuries,” he explained.
Behind the scenes of football, many have associated the growing number of cases with the use of synthetic meadows by some clubs. Pedrinelli, however, refutes this idea. “There is nothing in literature that leads to consent on the fact that the synthetic lawn causes more injuries than the natural lawn,” he said.
To try to contain the incidence of the problem, the International Football Federation (FIFA) has created the “FIFA 11+” program, focused on the prevention of accidents, including those of the crusader ligament, through specific exercises incorporated into the training.
According to the Brazilian society of Ortopedic and Traumatology, there is a consensus between the studies according to which LCA has not been healed in a natural and appropriate way after breaking. Therefore, surgical reconstruction is today a standard treatment for both athletes and ordinary patients.
After surgery, a prolonged period of physical rehabilitation begins with intensive physical therapy and follow -up medical to evaluate the recovery of ligaments.
Even with intense rehabilitation, movements such as a rapid deceleration, sudden changes of direction and landing after heels can become impossible. Therefore, it is essential that the patient follows the guidelines of the orthopedist and physiotherapist.
