Caffeine is a stimulant that keeps the brain in alert
Caffeine is a stimulant that keeps the brain in alert and can make sleep difficult. This is because it blocks the action of adenosine, a natural neurotransmitter that induces sleep and promotes relaxation. Is there a time limit for coffee without disturbing night sleep?
“The sensitivity of caffeine varies from person to person, depending on the metabolism, genetics and consumer habits. However, in general, it is recommended that the last cup of coffee is taken at least six hours before sleeping to reduce the risk of interfering with the quality of sleep”, suggests Amanda Figueiredo, a USP clinical nutritionist.
What are the risks of excess coffee?
Excessive consumption of drinks with a high concentration of caffeine, such as coffee, can cause a series of symptoms such as palpitations, hand or body tremors, intense anxiety, insomnia and agitation.
“At very high doses, caffeine can overload the cardiovascular system, increase blood pressure and irritate the gastrointestinal system, causing nausea, reflux, stomach sore or diarrhea,” adds the expert.
