Understand how rest can be the secret to the lasting results in the scale
Nights of sleep do not influence only mood or daily arrangement. Insufficient rest compromises hunger hormones, the desire for calorie foods increases and reduces energy expenditure, creating a scenario in favor of the accumulation of fat.
So sleeping well is important for weight loss as much as the maintenance of a good diet or exercise. “Poor quality sleep reduces the production of leptin, hormone responsible for satiety and increases the levels of ghilines, which stimulates the appetite. The result is simple: more hungry, less control and greater tendency to choose caloric foods”, explains Giovanna de Oliveira Balleiro, nutritionist of Dr. pure, clinic located in São Paulo.
Sleep deprivation compromises energy
The supplementary doctor Lucas Lemes Barros stresses that sleep also interferes with physical performance and muscle recovery. “During deep sleep, there is a release of growth hormones and reparative substances. Sleeping little or scarcely compromises recovery, reduces energy to train and slow down the metabolism,” he warns.
In addition, sleep deprivation is associated with higher cortisol levels, stress hormone that favors the accumulation of fat, especially in the abdominal region.

Improve sleep and weight loss
The professionals’ message is simple: weight loss without taking care of sleep is to row against the tide. Quality rest is an essential fuel for metabolism, for control appetite and for the maintenance of lasting results. Some suggestions for this are:
- Keep regular times to sleep and awaken;
- Avoid using screens (mobile phone, computer, TV) at least 1 hour before going to bed;
- Prefer light meals to dinner and reduce the consumption of caffeine at night;
- Create a favorable environment to rest: silent, dark and comfortable;
- Evaluate sleep as much as it enhances the diet and the training routine.
