September Green Hope: how to protect children from asphyxia

Perinatal asphyxiation is one of the greatest dangers faced by babies

The campaign warns the risks of the lack of oxygen at birth and highlights the role of prenatal care and adequate assistance in prevention

Perinatal asphyxiation affects thousands of infants in Brazil and all over the world by reducing or interrupting the intake of oxygen to the child before, during or immediately after childbirth. The lack of oxygenation can cause serious consequences, ranging from transitory difficulties to permanent neurological sequences.

In September Green Esperança, a month of awareness on the subject, the goal is to expand information and strengthen the importance of prevention. For the pediatrician Dr. Renata Castro, the key is to guarantee quality monitoring during pregnancy. “Perinatal asphyxiation is often the result of complications that could be anticipated or minimized with a well -conducted prenatal care and an assisted delivery by prepared teams,” he explains.

Risk factors

The main risk factors include maternal conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, infections and prolonged births. Emergency situations, such as the detachment of the placenta or problems with the umbilical cord, are also among the most frequent causes.

Impacts on the child

The consequences of asphyxia may vary considerably. In lighter cases, the child can only have momentary difficulties to start breathing. In more serious frames, there may be brain injuries that compromise motor and cognitive development. “The impact depends on the time of oxygen deprivation and on the speed of the medical intervention. Therefore, immediate neonatal resuscitation is decisive for the prognosis,” says the expert.

Service protocols

Currently, protocols such as therapeutic hypothermia – in which the child is subjected to controlled cooling – were effective to reduce neurological damage when applied soon. In addition, the formation of Team Medici in the resuscitation procedures is one of the most important measures to save human lives.

The green message of September

For Dr. Renata, the campaign recalls that information and preparation saves lives. “When parents and professionals know the risks and are aware of the warning signals, we can act faster and more effectively. Green September brings the hope that, with greater awareness, we can reduce neonatal mortality and offer a healthier future to many children,” he says.

The green Esperança September promotes care, knowledge and prevention at every birth. After all, guaranteeing a safe start is also investing in the future with more health and quality of life.
