The regulatory framework approved by the Federal Council for Veterinary Medicine opens up opportunities for the sector

In June, the Federal Council for Veterinary Medicine approved the regulation permitting the exercise of veterinary telemedicine (resolution no. 1465). In this context, the veterinarian Vinícius Meyer, CEO and founder of Televets, a startup of assistance between tutors and their pets, explains the main points of the practice of remote veterinary care.
“The regulation of veterinary telemedicine follows a trend towards the use of technologies that increase care practices in the various health sectors. Connectivity with veterinarians generates knowledge for the tutor and the latter, consequently, begins to take better care of their pets, generating health and quality of life ”, explains Vinícius.
With the authorization of the Regional Council of Veterinary Medicine to carry out tele-orientations for pets, Televets has brought together professionals, created care protocols and trained them to carry out remote orientations. Furthermore, since it has a 24/7 service for any region of Brazil, the company promises to democratize access to information that needs to be provided by specialists and that often ends up being transmitted over the internet incorrectly. .
A new challenge for veterinarians
The regulation of veterinary telemedicine brings with it a great challenge for the veterinary class in Brazil: understanding and improving how to use the methodology.
“Telemedicine is only a means, the veterinarian remains responsible for the care of the animal accompanied by the guardian, in the same way as in person. For the service to take place in a technical and competent way, the professional must know the advantages and limits of the practice in order to exercise the veterinary medicine in an ethical and efficient way ”, says the CEO.
The main points of practice are in the classification of modalities. For teleconsultation, for example, the regulation stipulates that the pet must have established a RPVAR (Previous Veterinary, Animal and Responsible Report), which is a preliminary face-to-face examination of that animal.
For others it is necessary to investigate on a case-by-case basis, with teletriage as a key moment for the vet to indicate the best service (online or in person). Another possibility is monitoring, where the professional will continuously monitor the animal, as in the case of convalescence after surgery or chronic illness.
In teleorientation, vets can answer questions and guide tutors on various topics: health, nutrition, behavior, environment, etc. Inter-consultation, on the other hand, is the modality aimed exclusively at veterinarians to exchange knowledge and help each other in complex problems, which can be a facilitator for various cases.
“It is an important topic and must be disclosed. I believe the approval of telemedicine is a breakthrough for the pet health industry. Animals have become part of families, so it’s only natural for people to look for updated and more simplified ways to take care of their pets, ”Vinícius points out.
“It is important to emphasize this running an online service is not just sitting in front of a screen. In Televets, for example, our veterinarians undergo training aimed at teleservice in order to provide guidance with quality, ethics and empathy ”, he concludes.
In 10 years, the sector has had a 363% increase in business, according to Sebrae. In this scenario, with the restrictions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, as many sectors retreated, the pet sector strengthens: segment revenues exceeded R $ 51 billion in 2021, 25% more than in 2020 , according to a survey by the Pet Brasil Institute.
