Diabetes: the nutritionist lists 6 foods with the best glycemic index

Patients with diabetes should always be aware of the glycemic index of foods to control blood sugar.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic disease of multiple origins. That is, several factors can lead to the onset of the condition. It is characterized by the lack and/or inability of insulin to adequately exert its effects on the body.

Insulin is an important hormone produced by the pancreas which has the function of transporting glucose from the blood into the cells, so that the body can use it as a source of energy. According to the Brazilian Diabetes Society (SBD), there are currently more than 13 million Brazilians affected by this disease.

It is important to underline that the diagnosis of diabetes does not necessarily mean that the patient will have to live with rigid limitations. This is because it is possible to maintain the quality of life by keeping the necessary appointments and adopting good habits. This is the case, for example, of adopting a balanced diet, practicing physical activity, using insulin (in the case of type 1 diabetes) and taking appropriate medications.

In the case of nutrition, nutritionist Antônio Wanderson Lack de Matos warns that diabetics should pay attention to the glycemic index of foods. This index is the value at which they are classified to calculate how quickly they affect blood sugar. In other words, it defines blood sugar levels.

“Foods that have a lower glycemic load are the most recommended in a diabetic diet since they help control glucose levels, preventing blood sugar spikes,” explains Antônio.

6 foods recommended for diabetics

Subsequently, the specialist lists 6 foods that, with the guidance of a nutritionist, can be consumed by diabetics. Check:

  1. Oats: offers a certain type of fiber that absorbs glucose before the intestine can absorb and transport this sugar into the blood;
  2. Flax seeds: offers fiber and enzymes that help lower a diabetic’s blood sugar level.
  3. Cinnamon: has bioactives that help reduce blood sugar;
  4. Apple cider vinegar: acts on receptors that cause blood glucose to enter cells, lowering blood sugar levels and reducing insulin resistance;
  5. Almonds: rich in monounsaturated fats, tannins, flavonoids and vitamin E, which act as antioxidants in the body, preventing damage caused by free radicals. They are also a source of calcium and magnesium, which help prevent osteoporosis;
  6. Fish: In addition to being a good source of protein, they are rich in omega 3, a type of good fat with anti-inflammatory action that helps control cholesterol and blood glucose levels. The nutritionist recommends the consumption of trout, salmon, sole, mackerel, among others.

In addition, the professional also recommends the consumption of other good fats such as animal and vegetable proteins with high biological value and complex carbohydrates. Among the foods with these characteristics, Antônio highlights: sardines, avocados, walnuts, olive oil, salmon, flax seeds and Brazil nuts, among others.
