Positive feng shui: 7 tips to put an end to clutter

To eliminate clutter in your home, store similar items in the same place: immediate identification.

A disorganized home can close off professional paths and hinder personal opportunities: avoid it!

If you want to preserve good energy in your home, the first step is to tackle the clutter and plan a step-by-step process to eliminate it once and for all. This is because rooms full of trinkets, piles of objects deposited in any way and countless misplaced objects do not contribute to good energy transit. According to feng shui, the Chinese philosophy that teaches us to harmonize environments, disorder prevents positive vibrations from circulating correctly. And this can harm residents’ well-being, as well as hinder personal, professional and financial opportunities.

“The whole process of decluttering is about letting things be and forget about them. It’s not just about getting rid of your stuff – that’s just the end result,” believes consultant Karen Kingston, author of Fix your mess with feng shui (Thinking editor). For her, letting things go is a consequence of first letting go of feelings. “The most important thing is to let go of the fear that keeps you attached to your objects.”

In the book the author guides the reader to start tidying up little by little. First, in a drawer. Then, on a bookcase, a desk or in a closet. And finally, the entire room. It also teaches that all surplus items should be placed in containers for disposal, such as “donate,” “sell,” “recycle,” and “trash.” This ordering helps eliminate visual disorganization and encourages the resident to organize the path of each box. Karen Kingston also lists tips for those who want to put an end to clutter in the home. Discover the main ones:

1 – Similar to similar

When packing your things, group similar items together. Tools stay with tools; cosmetics with cosmetics; craft supplies with craft supplies. When you disperse similar items throughout different rooms of the house, it is much more difficult to start and complete the tidying up.

2 – Everything in its environment

Get into the habit of storing things where they tend to be used. For example: cooking magazines can have a drawer in the kitchen cabinet. Storing these publications in the living room or bedroom is not practical, because it takes up space from other objects more suitable for these environments.

3 – Hierarchize the spaces

Anything you use frequently should be more accessible than anything you only use sporadically. Organizer boxes, hooks and various supports help a lot: key rings, hairdryer holders, pen holders, detergent holders, etc. Another effective solution are organizer drawers for intimate items or small or delicate accessories.

4 – Have you used it? Return it!

What makes clutter in your home worse is using items and not putting them back in their original place. Shoes in the living room, bag in the kitchen, book in the bathroom: don’t make it a habit! If you have children at home, provide baskets or boxes and teach them how to store toys, school supplies and other items. In this way the organization overcomes chaos.

5 – Label boxes or baskets

There’s no point in continuing to organize boxes and baskets around the house if you don’t identify what each one brings. Hence the importance of placing labels on boxes and baskets, not only to speed up the return of each object to its compartment, but also to save time in locating an object.

6 – Divide by colors

When organizing your closet, group your clothes by color. Visually, the furniture will be more organized. You will also save time when choosing an outfit, especially in the morning, when schedules are tighter.

7 – Archive the documents

Purchase a binder or set of folders to store all the important papers and documents related to your home or professional business. These folders or binders should be kept in a more private place: away from children’s access. Needing a document and not finding it immediately is very stressful: avoid this unnecessary anxiety!
