Daughters of the supreme god Zeus, the three Graces, figures from Greek mythology, represent beauty, joy and creativity.
The name of the novel refers to Greek deities; find out what all this has to do with Gerluce, his mother and his daughter
Three Thanksthe title of TV Globo’s new soap opera is arousing curiosity and also concern among viewers: after all, what do these three graces mean? Are they referring to the sculptures of female forms that the evil Arminda (Grazi Massafera), Mrs. Cobra, keeps in a locked room in her villa? Or do they refer to the protagonists Lígia (Dira Paes), her daughter Gerluce (Sophie Charlotte) and her granddaughter Joélly (Alana Cabral)?
Both hypotheses are correct: the three graces of the title correspond in fact to the mysterious sculptures and, symbolically, also portray the protagonists of the new nine o’clock soap opera, written by Aguinaldo Silva, Virgílio Silva and Zé Dassilva: poor and hard-working women, who try to survive in the face of adversity and the material needs of harsh reality.
However, in addition to these references, the three graces are also deities in Greek mythology. They are mentioned in the work Theogonywhich deals with the origins of the world, gods and heroes. Theogonia is written by Hesiod, a poet who lived on Greek soil seven centuries before Christ.
Understanding the myth
According to Greek mythology, the three Graces are daughters of Zeus and Eurynome. In ancient Greece, Zeus was the supreme god among all deities; and Eurynome, one of the daughters of the Titan Oceanus, a giant defeated by Zeus during the formation of the world.
The three daughters, or three graces, are called Aglaia, Euphrosyne and Thalia. Aglaia reflects beauty and splendor, while Euphrosyne personifies joy and youth. Tália symbolizes fertility and good mood.
Followers of Aphrodite
“N/a Theogonythe three graces represent what gives rhythm to life. They are linked to beauty in its different forms”, explains journalist, teacher and translator Cristina Rodrigues Franciscato, a doctoral student in Greek literature. “In mythical narratives, the three graces appear very much as followers of Aphrodite”, adds the expert. In Greek mythology, Aphrodite is the goddess of love.
Opening of the novel
The characteristics of the three graces and their closeness to the goddess Aphrodite could indicate that the protagonists of the plot will be able to overcome difficulties with affection, creativity and conviction of female power.
At the beginning of the novel the three graces appear as immobile as marble sculptures. However, they end up giving space to the three characters, while the scene fills with flowers, colours, lights and movements. This suggests that, over the course of the chapters, Gerluce, Lígia and Joélly will have to overcome obstacles and, at the same time, undergo a profound transformation, capable of giving them a voice and tripling the inner strength of each of them.
