Find out what to do to control your shopping compulsion and avoid impulse purchases on Black Friday
THE Black Friday There isn’t much time left and many consumers are already preparing to take advantage of the unmissable offers and discounts of the season. However, it is also important for everyone to be aware of excesses and avoid impulse buying.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), compulsive shopping – or oniomania – is a disorder that it reaches 8% of the world population. It is characterized by the inability to resist the instinct or desire to make a purchase.
Karina Stryjer, psychologist and emotional health project manager at Telavita, explains that oniomania, or compulsive buying disorder, is a serious condition that can lead to significant financial and emotional consequences.
“Symptoms of this condition include constant obsession with shopping, seeking emotional relief through consumption, losing track of time while shopping and excessive financial spending,” the expert points out.
Furthermore, the arrival of Black Friday and Christmas can worsen the condition. “People with shopping compulsion make a mistake when shopping at this time of year, as it is a time when spending money seems to be allowed, due to the festive atmosphere and promotions,” Karina points out.
What to do?
Compulsive shopping can be difficult to control, especially on dates like Black Friday. Therefore, the psychologist shared five tips to help consumers avoid impulse purchases during the shopping season.
- Create a specific shopping list and follow it strictly;
- Establish a clear budget and do not exceed this limit, even in the face of attractive offers;
- Evaluate whether your purchases are really necessary or if they are driven by momentary emotions;
- Avoid impulsive purchases, take time to think before finalizing the purchase;
- Seek support from friends and family to help you stay in control.
Seek help!
People who suffer from compulsive shopping often don’t recognize their addiction, which makes it difficult to seek help. However, the psychologist emphasizes the importance of seeking professional help if you notice symptoms of the disorder in yourself or in people close to you.
“As Black Friday approaches, it is essential to remember that balance and awareness are essential to guarantee a healthy and rewarding shopping experience. It is not a problem to buy, but it is necessary to understand if this purchase really makes sense”, concludes Karina.
