True companions in life, they are an excellent company and can be good for mental health; to know more
The love of Brazilians for animals is nothing new and a survey by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) demonstrates the extent of this passion: in 2018 it is estimated that there were almost 140 million pets, including dogs and cats, as you can imagine, among the most common pets in homes.

In addition to these interesting data, the market trend, well exemplified by the number of pet shops and the high consumption of products totally focused on the niche, indicates: the Welfare of pets is a concern for owners, but, after all, Why are pets so good for people’s emotions? This is explained by the psychologist Gabriele de França (CRP 06/161972).
“The connection between the owners and their animals occurs through the creation of the bond and everything that permeates it, it is a relationship of exchange. Human beings have their duties, such as bathing, food, water, veterinary care, in addition to their emotional responsibility. The animal, in turn, responds as best he can, being a companion, repaying the affection, accompanying his master and being faithful ”, explains the specialist.
According to the psychologist, the closeness between man and pet also occurs thanks to a real collaboration: “animals are friends who do not judge and always remain with us, regardless of the circumstances”. In turn, animals’ loyalty is due to their limited contact, as they tend to be more attached to their owners.
Can Pets Relieve Stress?
Adverse conditions of a day not only cause physical fatigue, but also have an emotional impact: research has already identified this stress and anxiety they are very present in the routine of Brazilians. Many, even living alone, find the necessary comfort in the company of a pet.
“At various times, being alone has a positive and even pleasant effect on our mental health. But it is important to remember that the human being is a social being and that being alone for a long time can cause loneliness. This, if felt intensely, for many days and within a place that should be our refuge (our home), can cause illness.
In this scenario, pets become an excellent option, as they compensate for the absence of company, exchange affection (albeit without words, but through gestures and looks) and generate a feeling of well-being and release of pleasure hormones, such as oxytocin ”, underlines Gabriele.
Children and pets: the benefits of socialization
The presence of pets brings benefits not only to adults, even children are positively affected and, as Gabriele points out, this interaction can collaborate in the development of the child:
- Building a sense of responsibility;
- Decreased stress (release of hormones such as oxytocin)
- Practice of physical activities: many animals tend to have a lot of energy, as do children, and playing with each other becomes beneficial for both;
- Development of empathy and affection.
