What are the causes of ocular rosacea? How can this situation be improved?

Cristina Imbriani, San Paolo

Answers Marco Alves, ophthalmologist and specialist at the Brazilian Society of Ophthalmology

The disease is a consequence of rosacea, which is a chronic dermatological disease, in which the patient experiences redness of the skin for no apparent reason.

The cause is unknown, but emotional factors, such as stress, can make the condition worse. Furthermore, studies show that there appears to be a genetic predisposition and cases are generally more common in women than in men.

When the eye is affected by rosacea, the patient has what we call blepharitis, a chronic inflammation in the corners of the eyelid. The development of lumps in the region, called chalazion, is common, as well as the appearance of sty and swelling.

The eye becomes drier and it is also possible for the patient to develop photophobia (sensitivity to light), tearing and a sensation of a foreign body in the eyeball.

For treatment, each case has a recommendation, but the most common is that eyelid hygiene is required, with specific products. You can also use eye drops and neutral shampoo to wash the area, gently rubbing the eyelid, exactly where the lashes come out. There are the secretory sebaceous glands, which must be free. With this, you improve the quality of the tear and relieve symptoms.
