A new study reveals that video games stimulate brain activity in regions associated with attention and memory

A study conducted by the University of Vermont, in the United States, and published in the scientific journal JAMA Network Open, could change the perception that most parents have of video games. This is because it can help develop children’s cognition.
I study
The researchers analyzed nearly 2,000 children and found that those who played video games for three hours a day or more performed better on cognitive skills tests than those who never played.
The research tested young people between the ages of 9 and 10 and separated them into groups of those who played or not. They rated their performance on two tasks that reflected the ability to control impulsive behavior and memorize information. The research team also analyzed the children’s brain activity while performing homework.
Results
“This study adds to our growing understanding of the associations between video game play and brain development,” said Nora Volkow, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, who provided much of the data analyzed. “She also suggests that there may be cognitive benefits associated with this popular pastime that warrant further investigation.”
During the survey, the researchers analyzed images of the participants’ brains using MRI. They found that children who played had increased brain activity in brain regions associated with attention and memory.
At the same time, they showed less activity in vision-related regions. Researchers believe this relatively low activity is caused by repeated play, which reduces visual processing.
Previous studies have linked video games to an increase in depression, aggression and arrhythmias, but this new work has not. Despite this, the researchers point out that this research does not allow for cause and effect analysis. So it doesn’t mean that kids have to spend unlimited time on their computers, cell phones, or TVs, in addition to the video games themselves.
