Italian fashion house Gucci announced Wednesday (23) that Alessandro Michele has stepped down as creative director of the brand after seven years.
In a note, the Kering group reiterates that the designer had a “key role in making Gucci what it is today, thanks to his revolutionary creativity and always in accordance with the brand’s codes”.
Michele, who previously worked at Fendi, was hired by Gucci in 2002 and assumed creative direction of the brand on January 21, 2015, replacing Frida Giannini. The debut takes place shortly after, during the winter Milan fashion week, held in February of the same year.
“There are times when paths separate because of the different perspectives that each of us may have. Today concludes for me an extraordinary journey, which lasted more than 20 years, within a company to which I have tirelessly dedicated everything my love and my creative passion,” he said.
According to the Italian, during this “long period, Gucci has been my home, my adoptive family”. “To this extended family, to all the people who have taken care of me and supported me, go my sincere thanks, my biggest and most moving hug,” she added.
“Together with them I have desired, dreamed, imagined. Without them nothing I have built would have been possible. To them, therefore, my most sincere wish: may they continue to feed on their dreams, subtle and impalpable matter that makes life worthy of being lived … May you continue to feed on a poetic and inclusive imagery, remaining faithful to your values, may you always live by your passions, driven by the wind of freedom”, concluded the designer.
According to a statement, the Gucci design team will continue the creative direction of the Maison until a new organization is announced.
Gucci chairman and chief executive officer Marco Bizzarri said he was “lucky to meet Alessandro at the end of 2014” and has since had “the pleasure of working side-by-side as Gucci charted its path to success.”
“I want to thank Alessandro for his 20-year commitment to Gucci and for his vision, dedication and unconditional love for this unique Maison over the years as Creative Director,” he added.
For François-Henri Pinault, president and CEO of Kering, “the path that Gucci and Alessandro have taken together in recent years is unique and will remain an exceptional moment in the history of this Maison”.
“I am grateful to Alessandro for bringing so much of himself to this adventure. His passion, imagination, ingenuity and culture have placed Gucci at center stage, where it deserves. I wish him all the best in the next chapter of his creative journey ,” concluded Pinault. 🇧🇷
