Ankle sprain: understanding what Neymar’s injury is

The expert explains that the treatment time depends on the severity of the torsion; it is not the first time that Neymar has injured this ankle

Neymar leaves the game with a swollen ankle

Neymar, the star of the Brazilian national team, suffered a sprained right ankle during the second half of the match between Brazil and Serbia, this Thursday (24), after a fight with Serbian fullback Milenkovic. With the injury, there is the possibility that the attacker will be absent in the match on Monday 28, when Brazil will face Switzerland, a match valid for group G of the World Cup in Qatar.

After undergoing distortion, also called torsion, the number 10 had to be replaced. The team doctor, Rodrigo Lasmar, said it was necessary to “wait 24h, 48h” to make a new assessment of the attacker’s situation. For Landsports physiotherapist Flora Pitta said that, in cases like this, ankle recovery can take place in a variable amount of time, depending on the severity.

According to Flora, a sprain occurs when there is “a shift in amplitude greater than the physiological motion of the ankle” and causes pain, swelling and sometimes muscle spasms. 🇧🇷A warping motion typically occurs in reversal or eversion. In Neymar’s case there was an eversion, as you can see that his foot is turned outwards,” he explains.

Neymar injured his ankle during Brazil's opening match at the World Cup.

The expert points out that this type of injury is classified into three levels of severity: grade 1, when there is ligament stretching; grade 2, when there is a partial injury of the ligament; and grade 3, when there is a total ligament tear.

“This type of injury is very common in sports,” says the physiotherapist. According to Flora, it is not possible to determine how long it will take to recover Neymar. He says he believes he won’t be in Monday’s game. “I think he will be rested for other games and will be treated because Neymar has already had other injuries to the same ankle, it’s not the first time. problem with that ankle for a while.”

In 2019, the star was out of the Copa America, held in Brazil, after suffering a sprain, and doctors detected a torn ligament in his right ankle, the same one that twisted this Thursday. That year, the player suffered the injury at the start of the friendly match in which Brazil defeated Qatar 2-0, at the Mané Garrincha.

Treatment and severity

According to Flora, a milder sprain can take a few minutes to recover from, but in severe cases it may take eight to 12 weeks for the person to fully recover, and some sprains may need to have a surgical procedure done.

Flora agrees with the position of the doctor who accompanies Neymar, of not yet determining the date of the star player’s return to the field, because, in this case, it is necessary to carry out imaging tests and observe if there will be any hematoma, which indicates whether there was rupture of a blood vessel.

The treatment, as explained by the physiotherapist, consists of physiotherapy, rest, application of ice packs and the use of anti-inflammatories.

“Neymar’s physiotherapy already began when he was on the pitch. If he were a patient of mine, in this case, the first thing I would do would be to put a slipper on him and not let him step on the ground. Today we have many resources in physiotherapy, such as lasers and therapeutic ultrasound for tissue repair. In her case, I think she may need a couple of weeks off,” she says.
