JK Rowling launches help service for victims of sexual assault

AFP- JK Rowlingthe author of the saga Harry Potterpresented, this Monday 12, an organization created by her to help women victims of sexual violence.

The organization, called Beira’s placeproposes “a support service for women, run by women”.

The service offers free assistance in the Scottish capital, Edinburgh – where the writer lives – to any woman over the age of 16 who has suffered sexual violence.

Beira’s Place is funded by the same author, who has experienced gender-based violence.

In recent years, JK Rowling has become a staunch advocate for women’s rights, sometimes opposing the cause of transgender activists, a sensitive issue in the UK.

In 2020 she was accused of transphobia for making fun of the expression “people who menstruate”. Her comments on Twitter provoked a series of reactions and some users recalled that transgender men could menstruate and trans women could not.

Since then, the writer has been the target of regular attacks and in November she reported receiving death threats.

The announcement comes as the Scottish Parliament considers a controversial bill aimed at easing the transition for transgender people.

JK Rowling has expressed her repudiation of the text, defended by the Scottish independence government.
