Proper physical exercises are key to relieving discomfort and avoiding low back pain
Low back pain affects men and women of all ages. The WHO (World Health Organization) has warned that 80% of the population will have this condition at some point in their lives. The main reasons include poor posture, being overweight, repetitive physical exertion and loss of muscle mass.
Causes of back pain
According to Mônica Marques, physical education teacher and technical director of Cia Athletica, low back pain is caused by a muscle injury, poor alignment of the vertebrae or compression of the intervertebral discs.
“It can originate from an imbalance between the strength and flexibility of the anterior and posterior muscles of the trunk, which also end up causing important postural changes,” he explains.
A sedentary lifestyle, being overweight, and poor posture leave the lumbar region weakened, inflexible, and stiff. Depending on the position and movement, the body itself tries to compensate for the force exerted on it, resulting in muscle injuries, pain and even a herniated disc.
Measures to minimize back pain
Mônica says that regular exercise is the most effective way to alleviate and avoid this discomfort. “Performing exercises for back pain strengthens the core muscles, which involve the entire abdominal region and the back of the body. Weight loss options are aquatic exercises because they have little or no impact on the joints of the back. vertebral column”.
Other types of exercises may be inappropriate as they put more pressure on the ligaments and discs of the spine. This is the case with running, for example, and other activities that include jumping. “When the person is in pain, full abdominal exercises should be replaced by partial ones, which focus on the back and abdominal muscles, to strengthen the lumbar and cervical spine,” he says.
Activities such as stretching, yoga and pilates are very welcome for those suffering from low back pain. “To find out which exercises are the most suitable, it is always important to consult a physical education professional”, she concludes.
For those who experience severe pain, a doctor should be consulted. Therefore, it is possible to combine exercises for low back pain with the temporary use of muscle relaxants or anti-inflammatories.
