Authorities have issued a health alert and ordered the product to be withdrawn from markets. Nine people reported symptoms
The authorities Australian issued a health alert last Friday 16, after at least nine people were poisoned by the consumption of a contaminated spinachwhich would cause delusions and hallucinations.
The Department of Health has ordered the recall of spinach produced by Riviera Farms and sold in Costco supermarkets. Health authorities believe that the toxic effect of spinach was produced by the “accidental” presence of a contaminant, without specifying what that contaminant would be.
The recommendation is that consumers who have previously purchased this product, with an expiration date of December 16, get rid of the vegetable. Ingestion of this contaminated spinach can cause delirium, confusion, hallucinations, dilated pupils, palpitations, warmth in the face, blurred vision, fever and dry skin and mouth, health authorities specified on Twitter.
For his part, a spokesperson for Riviera Farms commented that the spinach was most likely contaminated with “an herb that can have health consequences if consumed,” he told public broadcaster ABC.
Australian health authorities said nine people had been reported to have been poisoned from four different homes as of late last night, although Australian television network Nine reported Friday afternoon that the number exceeded 25 infected. /EFE
