Christmas dinner is more expensive – see bigger increases

This year’s Christmas dinner will be more expensive for Brazilians: in the last 12 months, up to November, inflation was 5.9%, according to the IBGE’s IPCA. However, looking at the groups and specific items most consumed this time of year, inflation can be much higher, according to a survey by XP.

In food at home, for example, prices have increased by about 13%. In the item-by-item assessment, cod and chicken saw increases of 7.9% and 5.1%, respectively.

The traditional French toast should surprise many consumers due to the higher cost of the ingredients for its preparation: the milk and derivatives group grew by 26% (in the natural milk even more, almost 40%); French bread, 18%; eggs, almost 20%. Sugar, in turn, was the only one in deflation: -1.1%.

According to XP economist Tatiana Nogueira, the main factors driving up prices in the year’s cumulative result are: global increase in prices of commodities such as wheat, corn and animal proteins due to climate problems — La Niña — , effects of the Ukraine x Russia pandemic and war.

“In general, agricultural commodities have been under pressure over the past two years due to the pandemic, climate problems (with crop failures) and war, with Ukraine being a major grain exporter. All this drives up costs, albeit with a punctual slowdown at the margin recently”, explained the specialist.

Variation in markets makes a difference: see research

The inspection group of Procon Carioca, an agency linked to the Municipal Citizenship Secretariat, conducted a survey on the prices of 33 products in five supermarkets with the aim of comparing the prices of some items commonly found in consumer dinners, such as olive, cod and tender . A high percentage of price variation was found, reaching 76.56% in the case of olive oil, from one market to another.

Bearing in mind the purchases that the consumer usually makes for the end-of-year festivities, Procon Carioca advises that it is important, at this time, to plan the menu in advance, always evaluating the products that will be used to assemble the dinner and the establishment in which it will be purchased, in order to avoid waste and always seek the best price.
