Historic site undergoing extensive renovation
One of the most famous sights in Florence, Italy, the Baptistery of San Giovanni has reopened to the public after being closed for two months due to extensive internal renovations.
The construction site was closed on October 17 for the construction of the structure that will allow the restoration of approximately 1,200 square meters of mosaics in the dome. The idea is that the works will be completed by January 20, 2023.
According to the Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore, responsible for the Baptistery, the completion of the works “will also allow visitors to see the mosaics up close”.
The Baptistery of San Giovanni faces the Duomo of Florence and is known as much for its mosaics as for its bronze doors – the original structures of which are protected in a museum in the same square.
The exact origin of the building is not known, with different versions, but it is agreed that it was built in the 4th century.
Since then a series of additions and renovations have given it the characteristics for which it is known today. The entire interior has undergone work to restore the luminosity of the place. 🇧🇷
