Covid-19: WHO reduces recommended isolation times for patients

The new indication is 10 days of leave for people with symptoms and five days for the asymptomatic

THE World Health Organization (WHO) announced on Friday 13 the reduction of the time indicated for solitude of patients with COVID-19. The new recommendation has reduced the isolation required for people with symptoms of the virus from 13 to 10 days. coronavirus and 10 to 5 days for asymptomatic people.

The recommendation is in new clinical management guidance, in which WHO also recommends the use of rapid antigen tests to identify if the patient still has the disease. This measure can reduce the period of isolation by up to three days, according to the person in charge of the WHO’s covid-19 response program, Janet Diaz.

The modification of the protocol took place on the basis of the analysis of the results of 12 studies, with 2,799 patients, in which the reduction of isolation produced a small increase in serious cases, which required hospitalization (with an average of two per thousand , in asymptomatic patients, and 19 per thousand among those with symptoms).

“Most people are expected to prefer shorter periods of isolation and this will have positive economic and social effects,” said the expert.

Of the recommended treatments, the only change was the expansion of the nirmatrelvir-ritonavir antiviral (marketed by Pfizer under the name Paxlovid). Now, even the WHO has listed it as an option for pregnant and lactating women affected by covid-19./EFE
