How the visa works to look for work in Portugal

Those who are interested in working and living in Portugal, but are not entitled to Portuguese citizenship, can also take advantage of other possibilities related to legal immigration to the country.

According to Ana Claudia Cardoso Braga, lawyer at Toledo and associates, an office that operates in the field of International Law and Immigration, it is possible to request a visa to seek employment with a contract. But, in this case, there are some general conditions foreseen by the Foreigners Law of the country.

“Among the conditions is having a valid passport and travel insurance and having proven means of subsistence during the stay, i.e. €2,100, equivalent to approximately R$11,000. This value refers to three minimum wages in Portugal, which in 2022 were 705 euros,” explains Ana Cláudia.

The lawyer specifies that the visa to look for work in Portugal is valid only for those who intend to have a subordinate job, and not for self-employed workers or digital nomads.

“If the immigrant does not have this sum, he can resort to a foreigner, or Portuguese citizen, who undertakes to cover his food and lodging expenses during the period of validity of the visa. In this case, the manager must also demonstrate financial means equal to three times the minimum wage in the country, ”she specifies.

Can you bring the family with you?

It is important to know that anyone looking for work in Portugal can bring their family with them, and applications for the main visa and family reunification can be submitted at the same time. The initial validity of the visa is 120 days and it is possible to request an extension for another 60 days.

“It is possible to request the renewal again, but there are conditions to be met, such as proof of financial capacity for another two months or the renewal of the financial support guaranteed by the Portuguese citizen or foreigner with a residence permit in Portugal”, says the lawyer .

If the visa holder does not obtain an employment contract during the period of the visa and its renewal, he must return to his country of origin. A new application can be submitted only one year after the expiry of the previous visa.

job vacancies in Portugal

Currently, the Law on Foreigners in Portugal provides for the establishment of a number of employment opportunities that can be occupied by professionals not belonging to the European Union; European Economic Area and third countries that have agreements on the movement of persons with Portugal.

New rules, however, should remove the limits on the number of vacancies that can be filled by foreign nationals, being particularly advantageous for citizens of countries that belong to the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP).

“More details are not yet known on what types of visas would be included in these rules, but it is likely that they will apply to all types of visas for Portugal,” explains Daniel Toledo, a lawyer working in the area of International Law, founder of Toledo and Associates and Partner of LeeToledo PLLC.

What is known is that the government wants to ensure that the migratory processes to Portugal take place in a more orderly and safe way, in order to help solve a problem that Portugal and other countries, including the United States, have had to deal with over the recent years, which is the lack of skilled labor in various industries.
