Intense summer heat increases the risk of skin burns through the sunlight. With the holiday season and more frequent walks on the beach and in parks, this problem becomes common and the lesions appear 1 to 6 hours after exposure.

The use of medicinal plants, such as the plant species Aloe vera (popularly known as aloe), may be recommended for treatment.

According to the teacher of the course of Pharmacy of the Anhanguera Collegeteacher Karen Higathe fleshy leaves of aloe vera are filled with a viscous liquid where the properties anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and healing. “This gel has been used since ancient times to moisturize the skin and take care of wounds,” says the professor.

The application is suitable for external use (on the skin) in case of inflammation and first or second degree burns. Green peels should be discarded, as they contain toxic components.

Only internal and transparent content should be used extracted from the leaves, as it has a rejuvenating effect on the skin, helps with hydration and is able to provide pain relief.

The recommendation is that a allergy test before treatment. It is possible to evaluate the possible reactions by applying a small amount on the back of the hand: if after two hours there is any type of redness or irritation, use is not indicated.

Aloe vera can be grown indoors, as it does not require special care, or purchased from compound or natural product pharmacies. The gel can be stored in the refrigerator for up to one month. The product can be combined with vitamins and other medicinal plants, provided there is guidance from a qualified pharmacist.

Anhanguera’s teacher warns him the use is contraindicated during pregnancy, lactation and for children under 2 years of agedue to lack of adequate data to demonstrate safety in these situations.

In case of serious and large-scale injuries, from chemicals or electricity, the patient must be evaluated by a health professional.
