Cosmetic acupuncture: know the procedure focused on beauty

Acupuncture is a technique originating from traditional Chinese medicine. Today it is recognized by the National Health Institute of the United States and is a medical specialty in Brazil. The procedure has numerous applications and can be an alternative for the treatment of gastritis, diarrhea, sinusitis, sore throat, rhinitis, bronchitis, asthma, headache, back pain or other parts of the body. Additionally, it can also help minimize mental health ailments such as anxiety and stress.

The technique applies a needle, heat, pressure, and other stimuli to specific points on the skin, called acupunctures. Cosmetic acupuncture uses these techniques to prevent and improve aspects related to beauty. The procedure brings excellent results, and has already conquered personalities such as Madonna and Alicia Keys.

The needles are inserted into the skin and, in many places, reach the muscles and fascia, the membrane that surrounds the muscles, explains Dr. Sley Tanigawa, acupuncture specialist and member of the Medical College of Acupuncture of the State of São Paulo (CMAeSP).

“The puncture increases blood circulation at the site, which eliminates toxins and increases tissue oxygenation, as well as stimulating the production of collagen. The effect of the puncture is greater when we associate it with electroacupuncture. In this case, a device it is connected to needles to give electrical stimulation, improving muscle contraction. This generates an increase in muscle strength, a reduction in sagging and provides a major improvement in the appearance of the skin,” he says.

How is the acupuncture aesthetic treatment?

First of all, you need to undergo a medical consultation, where the specialist will evaluate your main complaints, both cosmetic and health in general. After the history, it is possible to identify any health problems that interfere with beauty, such as hypothyroidism, which can dry out the skin, weaken the nails, lead to hair loss and gain weight. “Without curing hypothyroidism, no miracle or isolated acupuncture will solve the problem,” warns the doctor.

The specialist should also carry out a survey of the individual’s entire health, emotional and developmental history from pregnancy to the present time. “All these aspects are very important for acupuncture, as they reveal the patient’s profile within Traditional Chinese Medicine, his energy weaknesses that lead to diseases and unsightly alterations,” explains Dr. Sley.

After being diagnosed by Western and Eastern medicine, it’s time to plan which points and techniques will be helpful in your treatment. “There is no ‘cake recipe’ here, treatment is highly individualized, and what may be good for one may be terrible for another,” warns the doctor.

The needles are inserted into the place to be treated and into different regions of the body which leads to energy balance. “There is an enormous release of neurohormones, which give a feeling of relaxation and well-being. The effects vary from patient to patient, due to the degree of involvement of the problem and their personal characteristics, but generally, already in the second application, the gli effects are already noticeable. Treatments vary from ten to twenty applications, ranging from one to three per week, followed by a fortnightly or monthly maintenance period”, specifies the specialist.

Local treatments

Dr. Sley Tanigawa explains each of the local acupuncture cosmetic treatments. To watch:

Gua-sha for the face: it is a massage with a jade or bone spatula with dermatological creams done in the correct direction of the energy circulation in the face. It promotes lymphatic drainage, stimulates collagen production, increases blood circulation, eliminates toxins and also increases the absorption of the active ingredient in creams/oils.

Sucker: Used for face and body. Used in the treatment of cellulite, dark circles and localized fat deposits, as it promotes an increase in energy and blood circulation, in addition to the mechanical suction action. It is the same principle used to treat pain.

Electroacupuncture for localized fat deposits: the electric current (without shock!) applied through the needles in the adipose tissue decreases the size of the adipose cells, eliminating the fat residues through faeces and urine.

Electroacupuncture for sagging: the needles are inserted into the skin, into the acupuncture point, until they reach the muscle and connected to the device, promoting muscle contractions that stiffen and shape the muscle. Furthermore, it also increases skin firmness as it stimulates collagen production and increases blood circulation, increasing oxygenation and eliminating toxins. It can be used on face and body. Already in the first application it already has visible results, leaving the skin more beautiful, reducing dark circles and areas of redness.

Do people who are afraid of needles have alternatives?

According to the doctor, even those with a fear of needles can benefit from the relief of pain and discomfort. For these people Dr. Sley offers the following options:

  • Gua-sha;
  • sucker;
  • Laserpuncture (application of laser to stimulate acupuncture points, which does not hurt or hurt, but is slightly less effective than a puncture);
  • Auriculoacupuncture (application of quartz crystals to certain points of the ear to promote energy balance).
