New government says it has identified at least four immunizers at risk of shortages: BCG, hepatitis B, polio (oral vaccine) and triple viral
The leadership of former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) allowed 370,000 doses of AstraZeneca’s covid-19 vaccine to expire and had to incinerate the hundreds of thousands of out-of-date immunizers, the current director of the Department of Health said on Thursday 26 vaccinations of the Ministry of Health, Eder Gatti.
In a meeting of the Tripartite Interagency Commission (CIT), which brings together representatives of the ministry and city and state health departments, the director also said that the current management has identified at least four immunizers at risk of shortages: BCG, hepatitis B, polio (oral vaccine) and triple viral.
Gatti said the ministry’s current leadership is trying to negotiate with suppliers to regularize deliveries. The director detailed the main causes of the low supply of each of the vaccines.
In the case of the BCG vaccine, administered to newborns and which protects against tuberculosis, the ban by the Ataupho Paiva Foundation in Rio and the delay in the delivery of doses purchased outside the country are some of the reasons for the low supply. Gatti said the ministry had already managed to unlock and receive 2.5 million doses, with another 2 million to arrive by the end of the month.
As for the hepatitis B vaccine, the director said the program is under negotiation with the Butantan Institute, which is negotiating with a private partner.
The oral polio vaccine delivery schedule is also under negotiation with Fiocruz, which has had a problem with the tube supplier, according to the ministry.
Already triple viral, which protects against measles, mumps and rubella, is in short supply because more doses were used in 2022 than expected. According to Gatti, 4 million vaccines will arrive in February.
