This Monday, February 13 episode of All American on the CW left fiction fans with a tragic surprise. Coach Billy Baker, played by Taye Diggs since the beginning of the series, was indeed killed in a dramatic accident in Season 5, Episode 11.
When the team was returning from a sports competition, the bus had a flat tire, causing an accident. Billy managed to get out of the car with the rest of the team – or so he thought.
After calling his wife and daughter to tell them he was okay, he realized that Jabari (Simeon Dice) was still stuck in the bus balanced on the cliff. Then the coach decided to return there to save the teenager. In the final scene, Jordan (Michael Evans Behling), who was at the scene, tells the family that Bill did not survive.
While this death comes as a shock to most viewers, the series has so far chosen to keep its main characters, showrunner Nkechi Okoro Carroll told our colleagues. Deadline that Taye Diggs’ departure was planned long before Season 5 was written.
“At the beginning and end of each season, I talk to the cast about their character’s journey.“, he explained. “And it was during one of our conversations with Tay that we began to wonder about the future of his character: “Is Bill’s journey on the show over? And if so, what might his departure be like?’ For me, there was only one way out for Bill because the character could never leave after fighting so hard for his family.“
The upcoming episodes of All American Season 5 will allow us to see how each character will come to grips with this tragic death. Thus, Jordan will have to face the guilt he feels after his last conversation with Billy. He really argued with the latter and did not answer his call.

Olivia and Jordan will also have to deal with their father’s death and face their own demons.
On January 12, The CW announced that All American had been renewed for a 6th season, which is set to air next fall. The fate of its spin-off, Homecoming, still hangs in the balance.
