Nothing to do with neitir! This is how Naave almost looked in Avatar

Blue skin with bright white spots, long black hair, four fingered hands and pointed ears…

After the release of the first Avatar in 2009, viewers around the world got to know the unique appearance of the boat, the inhabitants of the planet Pandora in the famous saga.

However, as artist Joseph S. Pep, who worked from the beginning on the physical appearance of the characters, could give James Cameron’s Big Blues a completely different look.

Indeed, as is usually the case with a project of this magnitude, the character designers and illustrators offered many different sketches to the filmmaker before he settled on his favorite.

The concept art seen above is the first that Joseph S. Pep presented it to James Cameron in 2005 during a 14-day “baptism of fire” session where the illustrators had to come up with something new and photorealistic for the director. Although it features all the basic features of the boat, the character seen here is very different from the characters in the film.

“At this point Cameron didn’t show the slightest emotion during the debriefing”– says Joseph C. Pepe in an Instagram post.

“He just recognized the bioluminescent sea slug I used on my forehead. He said, ‘That’s a pelagic nudibranch, Phylliroe bucephala.’ “.
