The Presidency of the Republic affirms that the former governor has tried to participate in the Secom agenda, but would not have been received
BRASÍLIA – The former governor of Rio de Janeiro Wilson Witzel, subject of an impeachment process for suspected irregularities in the State Department of Health, this Wednesday 15 visited the Planalto Palace to participate in an agenda with the Secretariat for Communication ( Secom), under the authority of Minister Paulo Pimenta. Without expression in the political arena since he was removed from office in 2020, Witzel arrived in Planalto accompanied by another person at 16:29 and was allowed entry from the building’s security area after having said he would go to room 205, located on the second floor of the Palazzo, between the offices of Secom and the Press Office.
According to House officials, the location Witzel cited is a space reserved for meetings and waiting for guests. There is a sign on the door to the room that says “Personal Office”.
Palazzo Planalto said in a statement that the former governor tried to participate in a meeting of the Institute for Applied Legal Studies (IEJA) with Secom. In the note, the advisor says that Witzel is a supporter of the Institute. The text also states that the Rio politician was aware of the agenda and tried to participate in the meeting, but does not explain how he received authorization from agents linked to the Institutional Security Office (GSI ) to access the building.
The former governor stayed about 20 minutes at Planalto and waited part of the time in the aforementioned room 205, where three other people were also at the time. Planalto, however, said in a statement that Witzel was not received by anyone from Secom. Questioned by journalists both at the entrance and at the exit of the building, the politician preferred not to answer who the meeting would be.
After being removed from Rio’s Palácio das Laranjeiras, Witzel tried to return to politics in the 2022 election, but his candidacy for governor was rejected by the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) because he was still subject to the criminal record law .
