After the Chris Rock slapping controversy at the 2022 Oscars, Will Smith’s career isn’t over, and among his next projects is his return for the sequel to 2007’s “I Am Legend.”
In the film Smith plays Dr. Robert Neville, a military scientist who lives with his dog Samantha as the only survivors in New York after a virus turns the population into a kind of vampire.
Now, 16 years after it premiered, Warner Bros. producer Akiva Goldsman has confirmed that a sequel starring Will Smith and Michael B. Jordan is in the works and will also feature an alternate ending.

Although the film was well received and grossed $585 million, “I Am Legend” author Richard Matheson hated the 1954 film adaptation of his work, annoyed that many things had been changed, including the ending.
Given this, and to return Will Smith as Doctor Neville in the sequel, Akiva Goldsman told Deadline on February 15, 2023 that the film will be much more based on the book, unlike the first.
Even “I Am Legend 2” will draw inspiration from “The Last of Us” and what happened to the entire world after the infection destroyed the civilization, the producer confirmed saying that he liked the interpretation we saw in the game and the line.

In the finale of “I Am Legend” which could be shown in cinemas in 2007, Neville manages to find a cure for the virus, but it is too late because his house is attacked by a horde of monsters.
Realizing that all is lost, Neville sacrifices himself and gives Anna and her son Ethan the blood of an infected that contains the cure so they can take it with them and give hope to humanity.
However, an alternate ending was included on the DVD of the film, in which Neville is not sacrificed, instead realizing that he is the real monster, mercilessly killing and experimenting on many infected.
In the alternate ending, Neville realizes that the infected is conscious and that his attack is due to the fact that he kidnapped the alpha male’s mate, so he frees her and the leader of the horde spares his life.
As Neville realizes that in the eyes of the infected he is the monster, he decides to stop his research and join Anna and Ethan in their search for a colony of survivors.
This ending, in addition to keeping Will Smith’s character alive, sets the stage for a sequel, with Neville knowing there’s more behind the infected, but knowing they’re still a danger to humans,
