PGR calls for the investigation into Bolsonaro’s speeches on the pandemic to be closed

The Deputy Attorney General of the Republic, Lindôra Araújo, has asked the Federal Supreme Court (STF) to dismiss an action investigating whether former President of the Republic Jair Bolsonaro (PL) has spread disinformation about the covid-19 pandemic. The demonstration was contrary to the Federal Police (PF) report, which concluded that Bolsonaro’s conduct characterizes incitement to crime.

The investigation investigates Bolsonaro’s speeches live in October 2021, when the then president associated the covid-19 vaccine with an increase in AIDS cases and insinuated that people could die of pneumonia caused by the protective mask.

The Prosecutor’s Office assessed that “there are no minimum elements” for a criminal prosecution and said it saw no evidence that the ex-president’s conduct had aroused alarm in the population.

“Therefore, even if they may be considered questionable, the statements made by Jair Messias Bolsonaro, highlighted in the aforementioned report, reinforce a standard of conduct that is in line with his political actions since the beginning of the pandemic, which indicates that there is no request any authority that has acted with the intention of generating panic in the population”, reads the document.
