The presenter, who will be having a party on a themed ship, tries not to have contact with supporters of former president Jair Bolsonaro: “They would do me a great favor not to be near me”
Maria da Graça MeneghelMore known as XuxaHe turns 60 on March 27, but the celebrations have come and gone over the months, thanks to the profusion of events he’s already planned.
By the end of 2023 (and there is still little to go for 2024), the presenter will be the protagonist of a documentary, star of series (such as taran), will lead a drag caravan, will go back to the cinema (A fairy came to visit me) and, the highlight, will see his famous spaceship land on a ship totally adapted to his universe and which will be the stage for the concerts of Claudia Leitte, Gloria Groove, Daniela Mercury, Junno, Ana Carolina, KLB and standing you were johnson AND Sergio Malandro, as well as an unprecedented show that Xuxa has prepared to celebrate its six decades. The party will be broadcast on Multishow.
“What was supposed to be an ordinary event, with presentations and, at most, a surprise, has turned into a thematic ship,” comments Xuxa, in an interview with Estadão. In fact, everything around Xuxa appears to be superlative. In the 1980s, for example, she managed to sell 3.6 million copies with the album Xou da Xuxa 4. Cornrows and their everlasting arrangement have enchanted children in Brazil and other countries. A queen of babies fascinated millions of people.
Success, however, came at a cost: your privacy. “I wasn’t prepared, because I started working as a model at 16 believing I would quit in four years at most to study veterinary medicine,” she says. “But, at 20, I went to TV (Manchete) and, at 23, I was invited to direct a program on Globe. Then my life turned upside down, because there was no way to separate public life from private life”.
Xuxa got into a frantic pace, working from Tuesday to Sunday. “The people who lived next to me ended up becoming my family”, observes her who, in the interview, preferred not to name names Marlene Mattwho became an entrepreneur and director, fiercely dealing with all matters relating to the host.
“Little by little I empowered my director, my manager, my producer and friend,” he recalls. “That power imprisoned me and took away my freedom to have an intimate life for a long time. It was a very high price and unfortunately I had no way of separating the subjects, because I had given that power and, to take it away from me, it was only possible with our separation. This is the only way I’ve been able to distinguish between professional and personal life.”
But there were no hard feelings and Marlene takes part in the documentary that Pedro Bial directs for the global game, which also produces Queenseries where Xuxa is played by other artists.
With Xou da Xuxa, which debuted in June 1986 and ran for more than six years, ushered in a formula for a children’s auditorium program in Brazil. The presenter says she didn’t expect such a success, as it was based on her tastes. “I looked at the Michael Jackson and wanted to copy her dress. Watch clips from Madonna and wanted to copy their faces and mouths. I saw who was successful out there and brought in the choreography for my shows and clips.”
Interestingly, Xuxa sometimes got angry when other people copied her. “I studied, worked hard, traveled and brought ideas, like a sun band that I put on my head to add volume, since I’ve always had little hair,” she says. “A week later, the Angelica and the Mara Maravilha, who had a lot of hair, also wore a tiara. Not that I didn’t like it, but they could have looked elsewhere, like I did.”
political position
Xuxa lost 800,000 social media followers when, last year, at the height of the political divide that marked the presidential election, he told the newspaper The globe that “if you don’t take sides, you agree with what’s wrong.” It contributed to that massive flight that Xuxa declared his support Squid.
“In fact, I don’t think they were ever my followers, because they didn’t understand anything of what I stood for all my life, which is having respect for nature, for differences, for the need for inclusion and acceptance of different choices It was a good thing they’re gone and I hope they never come back, just move away.”
Rather than supporting the PT candidate, Xuxa intended to make public his opposition to the presidency of the Jair Bolsonarowhose name he prefers not to mention and whom he treats as sexist, racist, homophobic.
Xuxa believes that the politician must pay criminally for his actions, because he has attacked the dignity of women, homosexuals, indigenous peoples and has not yet taken an open position against pedophilia and the devastation of nature. “We know that the world (and Brazil in particular) has a macho culture, but this must be overturned.”
Such a position convinced Xuxa to move away from artists who were sympathetic to the thinking of the former president, including sertanejos airoqueiros, passing through funkers. “In my opinion these are people who should be kissing and hugging and making show for those who are like them,” she says. “They’d be doing me a big favor by not being around me. I wouldn’t say ‘I don’t want to get around you.’ myself.”
But, since the presidential elections had a very even result, literally dividing the country in half, Xuxa knows that, inevitably, he will have contacts with people who disagree with his political thinking. “I work with the public, I live off my image and I don’t live on a small farm just taking care of my animals. I will definitely have to talk to and sadly work with these people – I hope they never want to talk to me about this topic.”
The conviction with which he speaks is the result of a maturation process, not always easy, but which has contributed to forming the citizen Maria da Graça Meneghel. To the point of responding to criticism with facts – such as the recent one from the senator Ciro Nogueira (PP-PI), which did not approve of her choice as the new vaccine ambassador in the country. “When I ran the ‘Beijin, beijin, bye, bye, infantile paralysis’ campaign, 93% of the children were vaccinated and the polio has been practically eradicated”.
