In the age of streaming, it has become rare to wait several years to discover a new season of a series. Even if there are exceptions like Stranger Things, especially long-form fiction, many platforms favor speed to keep the public interested.
The return of Carnival Row to Prime Video for a second and final season begs the question: Why did it take so long to discover a sequel? Let’s change some elements of context: the first season of the fantasy series, which was hosted by Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevingne, was released on August 30, 2019.
A month earlier, the program has already been updated by Amazon. Filming begins in Prague in November 2019, before being halted in March 2020 due to the pandemic. At this time, the first half of the season was already filmed. In Interview granted Collider In August 2020, Orlando Bloom, who is also a producer, explains that Amazon wants to release the sequel in two parts to avoid the wait.
Ultimately, this project failed. Season 2 filming will not resume until May 2021. The conditions are unusual for the series team. Accustomed to filming in sub-freezing temperatures – which lends to the programme’s dark and icy atmosphere – they had to deal with the heat this time around. “It was so hot that I put ice cubes under my underwear”, laughs Cara Delevingne for AlloCiné.
It was not difficult for the actor to wait so long to find the character. “I feel very close to Vinette, the hero, it was very easy to find him, he explains. I still have a passion for playing it. The trap was definitely a season changer because it also changes our game.”
After all these unforeseen events, Carnival Row wraps up in September 2021, almost two years after the first clapperboard. As with the first season, post-production work will take more than a year. The release of the season was finally announced in November 2022. After this difficult production, which certainly cost the platform more than expected, the series has been canceled after this season 2.
Carnival Row is available on Prime Video.
