The bodies of 18 migrants were found this Friday (17) inside a truck about 20 kilometers from Sofia, the Bulgarian Interior Ministry announced.
The cause of death is still unknown, but authorities have ruled out a car accident.
The truck, abandoned by the driver near the town of Lokorsko, on the outskirts of the capital, was carrying wood and more than 40 irregular Afghan migrants, who were in a “special hiding place”.
According to the first investigations by the Sofia Prosecutor’s Office, cited by the Bulgarian press, all of them would have left the border with Turkey to be transported to the border with Serbia.
The government statement also says the truck has Bulgarian license plates and police are looking for the smugglers, who have fled.
Health Minister Assen Megidiev said at least 14 migrants in the vehicle were hospitalized and four of them are in serious condition because the truck’s hideout did not have enough oxygen.
In recent months, Bulgaria has faced an unprecedented influx of refugees since the 2015 migration crisis.
