What will we see this year on Disney +? That’s the question that experts at the American company seem to have been asking themselves in recent weeks, as reported The Hollywood Reporter. According to American media, the much-watched house is currently backtracking with plans for some changes and adjustments.
While the streaming platform’s stated strategy at launch was to overwhelm subscribers with Marvel and Star Wars content, recent announcements suggest that Disney wants to branch out into the space. Five series were originally slated to launch in 2023 on Disney+: Secret Invasion, Loki Season 2, Ironheart, Agatha: Coven of Chaos and What If…? Season 2.
Currently, the American giant wants only two: the secret invasion of Samuel L. With Jackson and Loki season 2. As a result, What If, Ironheart, and Agatha (the latter two have already been filmed) won’t be released until 2024, the same year as Daredevil: Born Again.
It seems only logical that the two series remain on the 2023 schedule, as Loki Season 2 is closely tied to the release of Ant-Man 3, which brings the MCU’s new big bad, aka Kang, to cinema. As for Secret Invasion, we’ve been waiting so long we’ve given up hope of even seeing it. We also understand why Disney+ didn’t announce a release date when rumors talked about a Q1 launch.
But why ?
If the announced strategy is to allow subscribers to watch their programs in peace and not feel “oppressed” by the rhythm of the movie/series, the real reason is also material. We know these programs are expensive to produce and some require more time in post-production.
This was especially the case with She-Hulk last summer. Directed by Tatiana Maslany, the series was criticized for lackluster special effects – leading the teams to complain about the workload imposed by Marvel in too short a time. So the goal is to do less in favor of quality. And we can only applaud.
