The world of manga and Japanese animation is in mourning. Artist Leiji Matsumoto, known worldwide for creating the character of the intergalactic pirate Albator, died on Monday, February 13, at the age of 85 of heart failure, as announced recently by production company Toei.

Born in 1938 on the Japanese island of Kyushu, Leiji Matsumoto, who greatly admires mangaka Osamu Tezuka, published his first manga when he was only fifteen years old.
