The Vampire Diaries: How Nina Dobrev Changed the Fate of Katherine’s Character

For eight seasons, fans of The Vampire Diaries have eagerly followed the heart stories of Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley), two brothers who share the same person, Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev).

Over the course of episodes and seasons, the latter discovers that he has a doppelganger named Katherine, a vampire who replaced two of his suitors centuries ago.

Two characters similar to each other like two drops of water, Nina Dobrev was responsible for their embodiment. And without knowing it, the actress greatly influenced the origin of Catherine Pierce.

Catherine must not be Bulgarian

It’s no secret that The Vampire Diaries is loosely adapted from a series of novels The Vampire Diaries, written by LJ Smith. While the beginning of the series that aired on the CW from 2009 to 2017 remains the same as in the books, Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson, the two creators, made some changes to the story.

And there’s a character that’s gone through a lot of changes, and that’s Katherine Pierce. In the novel from which “The Vampire Diaries” was adapted, Katerina Petrova’s character in the series was of Bulgarian origin, named Kathryn von Schwarzschild, and was of German descent.

And if at first the authors did not plan to change the origin of the character, the choice of Nina Dobrev during the castings changed everything. The actress was actually born in Bulgaria and immigrated to Canada when she was only two years old. The actress is fluent in the language, so the writers decided to adapt the character of Catherine to Nina Dobrev.

Find The Vampire Diaries every Monday to Friday from 9.30am on NRJ12. Season 8 of the fantasy series is available in its entirety on Amazon Prime Video.
