The Blumhouse studio, responsible for such blockbuster films as “Get Out!” (2017) and “Halloween” (2018), will start developing games. For this the studio has created a new subsidiary, Blumhouse Games, which will develop the projects in partnership with Atomic Monster, as soon as the merger of the two companies is completed.
The proposal to merge Blumhouse and Atomic Monster was announced last year and, according to Blumhouse, the deal should be finalized in the coming months.
Once the deal closes, the subsidiary will partner with independent developers to create original horror games for consoles, PCs and mobile phones. As is usually the case with movies, Blumhouse Games will create low-budget games (less than $10 million), encouraging innovation and creativity from developers.
“We have been looking to assemble a team for some time to begin capitalizing on growth opportunities in interactive media,” Blumhouse president Abhijay Prakash said in a statement. “When we sat down with Zach [Wood, presidente da Blumhouse Games] and don [Sechler, diretor financeiro]they articulated an approach that resonated with the Blumhouse model and we knew it was a perfect place to begin our foray into the interactive space.”
Wood has over twenty years of game production experience, having released games for a variety of platforms, from the Game Boy to the PS5 and Xbox Series X. Among the successful games he has produced are ‘Sound Shapes’, ‘Hohokum’, ‘ The Unfinished Swan” and “Legato”.
“During my time in the industry, I’ve been fortunate enough to work closely with developers to bring their ideas to life,” Wood said in a statement. “There is a unique opportunity for horror and the genre in the indie game space, and I am thrilled to join Blumhouse in significantly leveraging the company’s brand, reputation and creative talent.”
Blumhouse’s most recent production in collaboration with Atomic Monster was the horror film “M3GAN,” which grossed over $170 million at the worldwide box office and earned a 94% critical approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
