Harry Potter: Are you a Slytherin? That’s what the name means

Hogwarts has the same ritual every year: the first years enter the Great Hall the day before classes begin and a feast is arranged. As a guide to a particular event, an object called a sorting hat is brought and placed on each child’s head to determine which school they will be assigned to.

There are four houses, each representing virtues and character traits: Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin.

Slytherin is called “Slytherin” in English, a word that does not exist in this spelling, but occurs with an “i”: “slither”, which means to crawl, wave. The “-ing” suffix indicates ongoing action and is sometimes shortened to “-in”. Therefore Slytherin can be translated as “wavy”.

The house symbol is a snake on a green (=green) and silver field, we hear the translation in Slytherin. This also applies to the co-founder and house creator of Hogwarts: Salazar Slytherin.

Slytherins remember their Quidditch team

Slytherin students often have a reputation for being self-centered, deceitful, ambitious, and shrewd. Some of them are also intolerant of Muggle-born children, whom they derogatorily refer to as “mudbloods”.

The most famous of them are Draco Malfoy and his parents, Tom Riddle, as well as Voldemort, Bellatrix Lestrange, Dolores Umbridge, Crabbe & Goyle duo and of course Severus Snape.
