Released in 1998, the film, based on Johnston McCully’s masked vigilante character Zorro, left its mark on the world of cinema and pop culture.
Produced by Steven Spielberg, among others, the feature film was directed by Martin Campbell in Mexico City. When it was released, it became a critical and commercial success, grossing $95 million from an initial budget of $250 million.
In the film, the original Zorro, Don Diego de la Vega (Anthony Hopkins), escapes from prison to find his long-lost daughter (Catherine Zeta-Jones) and avenge his wife’s death at the hands of corrupt governor Rafael Montero (Stewart). Wilson). He’s then aided by his successor (Antonio Banderas), who pursues his own vendetta against the governor’s right-hand man…while de la Vega’s daughter falls in love!
Based on its success, a sequel was released in 2005 called The Legend of Zorro, also starring Antonio Banderas and Catherine Zeta-Jones, directed by the same director.
