This is not very good news for fans of the HBO series.
The most anticipated series of 2023 not to miss
Succession’ (3×09): the end of the third season, explained
The best series in history that you must see
‘Succession’, one of HBO’s great current jewels and one of the proposals that helped redefine the company’s line after the end of ‘Game of Thrones’, is about to end.
Series creator and showrunner Jesse Armstrong revealed that the upcoming fourth season will be the last.. The creator told The New Yorker that “there is promise in the title of ‘Succession’. I never thought this could go on forever. The ending has always been on my mind. Ever since season two, I’ve been trying to think: Is this the last one, or the next one, or the next one?
“I met with some of my fellow writers before we started writing the fourth season, between November and December 2021, and I said, ‘Look, I think this should be it.’ What do you think?’ And we looked at various scenarios: we could do a couple of short seasons, or two more seasons, or we could go on for years and turn the show into something quite different, and be a larger, lighthearted, fun format, where there would be good weeks and bad weeks. Or we could do something a little more powerful and rounded out, and come out a little strong. And that was definitely always my preference.”
HBO representatives have declined to confirm that the information from The New Yorker is accurate. What is known for sure is that the fourth season of ‘Succession’ returns on March 27.
The news puts an end to speculation about whether ‘Succession’ would end with its fourth or fifth seasonsomething Armstrong has hinted at ever since the Roy dynasty drama broke out as an awards season favorite.
“I feel deeply conflicted. I quite enjoy this period when we’re editing, where the whole season is, but we haven’t released it yet. I like the interregnum,” Armstrong said. “And I also quite liked the period where I and my close associates knew that this was probably it, but we hadn’t had to face it in the world. It’s been a difficult decision, because the collaborations, with the cast, with my colleagues The writers, with Nick Britell and Mark Mylod and the other directors, they’ve been so good. I feel like I’ve done the best job I can do, working with them.. And HBO has been generous and probably would have done more seasons, and they’ve been nice to say, ‘It’s your call.’. That’s fine, but in the end it’s also a responsibility: it feels pretty wicked to stop doing it.”
“Succession” was a hit from its first season and won the Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series in its second season, a win it followed with its third season. The show’s extensive cast, which includes stars Brian Cox, Jeremy Strong, Nicholas Braun, Kieran Culkin, Matthew Macfadyen and Sarah Snook.
Created by Armstrong, who earned a general contract with HBO for his work on the series, the series also counts producers Adam McKay and Will Ferrell among others.
The series has become a key benchmark for HBO after the completion of such award-winning hits as ‘Game of Thrones’ and ‘Veep’. It’s part of a list of originals at the company led by Casey Bloys that also includes ‘The White Lotus,’ ‘Barry,’ ‘Euphoria,’ ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm,’ ‘Industry, ‘House of the Dragon,’ and ‘The Last of Us’.
Bloys has maintained for some time that the decision to end ‘Succession’ would rest entirely with Armstrong., as the executive has a history of letting creatives determine what’s best for the story. Bloys has also maintained that the series is unlikely to have or continue with a spin-off.
However, Armstrong commented that the door remains open to revisit the power-hungry world of the Roys: “I think this succession story we were telling is complete.“, he assured. “This is the potent season to deplete all of our interest reserves, and I think there’s some pain in all of these characters that’s really strong.. But the feeling that there might be something more to an allied world, or allied characters, or some of the same characters, that’s strong with me too. I have warned at the end of the series, when I spoke with some of my collaborators, like: Maybe there is another part of this world that we could return to, if we wanted to? Maybe there’s something else that can be done that builds on the good of the way we’ve worked on this.”
