If you like devious characters, those with smiles that send shivers down your spine, and those who can pull more tricks than each other… then The Consultant is the series for you! And especially since the demonic character of the series is played by Christoph Waltz, who is never as good as when he scares us.
Wickedly charismatic, Waltz embodies a slightly more civilized version of the man who made him famous on the international stage, namely the despicable Hans Landa in Inglourious Basterds. His name is Regus Patoff. He makes the slightest movement with extreme caution. He amazes his interlocutors with his mastery of apparently difficult foreign languages. He is extremely polite, efficient and displays a smile that goes from cute to chilling.
This strange Mr. Patoff is a new consultant for CompWare, a Los Angeles-based mobile game developer. And while he perfectly straightens his tie and reveals his phobia of going up or down stairs, he makes a terrifying announcement about his new diet. Or rather a dictatorship. Then two employees of the company feel obliged to investigate this curious character.
Any resemblance to a certain Elon Musk cannot be coincidental. The brutality of Mr. Patoff’s management is borrowed from famous personalities. The series presents itself head-on as a scathing critique of the dominant/dominated relationship in the workplace. Don’t forget to do a little update on the post-Covid fear associated with offices right now.
The central characters are not necessarily the most interesting. Elaine (Brittany O’Grady) oscillates between being a Nancy Drew detective and a sleazy career. And Craig (Nat Wolff) zigzags between sucker, skeptic, slacker and genius.
But when it comes to Patoff, his uncertainty takes on another dimension: sometimes he’s supernaturally terrifying, sometimes he’s just doing bookkeeping. Which in the end is also terrible. We get a Faustian tale behind this company from Tony Basgallop, creator of Servant, who here recreates the same anxiety-inducing and suffocating atmosphere behind closed doors.
For fans of very dark comedies, you’re welcome!
