Hugh Jackman spent more than two decades as Wolverine in the X-Men franchise. After portraying the character nine times on screen, it left a deep mark on him and left a mark… especially on his voice!
As Variety reports, all the screaming and grunting of the superhero took its toll on the actor’s voice, who revealed on the BBC’s “Front Row” show that playing Wolverine permanently damaged his vocal cords.
I hurt my voice with Wolverine. My falsetto isn’t as loud as it used to be and I attribute that directly to some of the grunts and squeaks. My voice teacher at drama school would be horrified by some of the things I did.
Hugh Jackman continued:We learned how to yell and scream without damaging our voice. However, during Wolverine, I did some yelling and screaming and other things that I think hurt my voice. I’m working on it. I work with a singing teacher and try not to injure myself. I put a lot of energy into both physical movements and vocal preparation for each role.“

The actor will soon growl and scream as Wolverine once again when Deadpool 3 begins filming later this year. That’s why Marvel will pair Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine with Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool, which will be the MCU’s first R-rated film. Hugh Jackman last played Wolverine in 2017’s Logan: this would be his final appearance as the iconic character.
Steroids or chicken?
In an interview with HBO’s “Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace” last month, he also talked about his physical training for the role of Wolverine, training that often took a toll on his body. This time he was asked if he ever took steroids to gain muscle.
“No, I like my job. And I love Wolverine“, he replied. “I have to be careful what I say, but I have been told anecdotally of side effects. And I was like, “I don’t like that very much.” So no, I did it the old fashioned way. And I’m telling you, I ate more chicken – I feel so sorry for all the vegans, vegetarians, and chickens in the world. Actually, karma is not good for me. If God has anything to do with chickens, I’m in trouble.“
In anticipation of Deadpool 3, which is set to hit theaters on November 6, 2024, the entire X-Men saga can be seen on Disney+.
