The bivalent vaccine against covid-19 begins to be applied this Monday; check priority groups


The bivalent vaccine is an upgrade from earlier vaccines produced against the disease and also protects against omicron subvariants

This Monday, February 27, Brazil begins the first phase of its immunization campaign against covid-19 in 2023. States will begin to strengthen Pfizer’s bivalent vaccine: the bivalent vaccine is an upgrade from the first vaccines produced against the disease and it also protects against omicron subvariants.




Brazil starts applying the bivalent vaccine this Monday

In November 2022, bivalent vaccines were approved by National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) and the first batches arrived in the country in December. Two different immunizers will be used for the application: the Bivalent BA.1which protects against the original variant and also the Omicron BA1 variant and the BA.4/BA.5 bivalentable to act against the original variant and also against the Ômicron variant BA.4/BA.5.

In the first phase, senior citizens aged 70 and older, residents of long-term institutions, immunocompromised people, indigenous, riverfront and quilombola communities will receive the vaccine. Next, it will be the turn of the elderly between 60 and 69 years of age. The third priority groups will be pregnant and postpartum women. Finally, the health professionals. Second Ministry of Healththe goal is to immunize about 90% of these people.

As for the other groups, the goal is to continue vaccinating with the monovalent immunizer: a booster dose for those under 40 and two booster doses for those over 40.

Five Brazilian state capitals have already started rolling out the vaccines. They are: Manaus (AM), João Pessoa (PB), Recife (PE), Campo Grande (MS) and Vitória (ES). Fortaleza (CE), Belém (PA) and Florianópolis (SC) have not yet released information on immunization start.
