The director of “Triangle of Sadness” will preside over the 2023 Cannes Film Festival

Two-time Palme d’Or winner director Ruben Östlund has been announced as president of the competition jury for this year’s Cannes Film Festival. He is the first Swedish president of the festival since actress Ingrid Bergman (“Casablanca”) in 1973.

“I am very happy and proud to receive the honor of presiding over the Cannes Film Festival jury,” Östlund said in a statement. “I am sincere when I say that film culture is in its most important period ever. Cinema is a collective experience, we watch it together and this increases the intensity of the experience,” said the director.

Östlund is an old acquaintance of the French festival. His feature films “Involuntário” (2008) and “Play” (2011) were screened in the Um Certo Olhar exhibition and in the Quinzaine des Réalisateurs of the festival.

The award ceremony began with the comedy drama “Força Maior” (2014), winner of the Jury Prize for the Um Certo Olhar play. Her next film, ˜The Square: The Art of Discord’ was the first to be shown at the competitive show. And she won the Palme d’Or for best film in 2017.

Last year he returned to Cannes with “Triângulo da Tristeza” and won the Palme d’Or again.

Buoyed by its win at Cannes, ‘Triangle of Sadness’ became Östlund’s biggest commercial success, winning the European Academy Awards for Best Film, Best Director and Best Screenplay on the continent and still garnered three Academy Award nominations in the same categories.
