Actor Brendan Fraser returned to Hollywood with the film The whaledrama based on a book of the same name which earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor at this year’s awards.
Directed by Darren Aronofsky, The whale casts Fraser as Charlie, a reclusive English professor living with severe obesity and binge eating disorder. Charlie weighs over 200kg and is couch-locked, having difficulty moving around the house, as well as carrying a lot of emotional baggage.
Brendan Fraser won Best Actor at the Critics’ Choice and SAG Awards and was thrilled to be applauded at the Venice Film Festival. Fraser is still up for Oscar 2023 (check out the full list of nominees here), where The whale it was nominated for two other categories: Best Supporting Actress for Hong Chau and Best Makeup and Hairstyling for Adrien Morot.
This was the first Oscar nomination of the actor’s long career, where he competes with Austin Butler (elvis), Colin Farrell (The Banshees of Inisherin), Bill Nighy (life) and Paolo Mescal (after sun). To star in the film, Fraser had to undergo a physical transformation. He revealed that he used 130kg of prostheses to play a morbidly obese man.
The whale features a cast that includes, in addition to Brendan Fraser and Hong Chau, names like Sadie Sink, Samantha Morton and Ty Simpkins and is based on the play of the same name by Samuel D. Hunter, who also signs the screenplay.
The film premiered in Brazilian theaters last Thursday (23). The feature is not yet available on any streaming platform, either for rent or purchase. Check the theater schedule in your city for availability.
