This is not the first time that a film or TV series has been censored in the most conservative countries. Sex scene, kiss, sometimes even bad words…
The Last of Us is the latest date to be allowed a few cuts, more precisely episode 7, which airs Sunday on HBO (and is available the following day on Prime Video in France).
Warning, the rest of this article contains spoilers. If you haven’t seen it, go ahead.
In Episode 7, titled “Left Behind,” which adapts the DLC focused on Ellie (a sequel to the original game), we discover how a young girl was bitten. If it happens like a hair in a soup — especially after Joe’s (Pedro Pascal) injury — the writers wanted to show how that injury triggered a painful memory. Seeing him die to his only friend, Riley remembered.
Gamers discover that Ellie (Bella Ramsey) is gay in a scene where she kisses her friend, played by Storm Reid. A passage that has been redacted in some countries, as an Egyptian journalist reveals in this tweet:
The cut is also so smooth and so unexpected given that Episode 3 wasn’t censored that it made me think it’s a “weird departure from a video game. @hbomax / @Naughty_Dog‘. https://t.co/Ea33PfanUj

“The Last of Us episode ‘Left Behind’ is censored on OSN+ (Middle East and North Africa region), with a (quite important) kissing scene; And that makes absolutely no sense, given that the one on Bill and Frank didn’t have any wounds..”
Strange censorship when we learn that episode 3, which focuses on gay couple Bill and Frank, did not undergo any cuts. As reported games spotThis is not the first time that the OSN+ platform (available only in the Middle East) has allowed itself some changes.
The Assassination and Dragon House series paid the price. The site also reached out to HBO about why the Ellie/Riley kiss is more disturbing than the Bill/Frankie…
To be continued.
